According to EEDI rules, the starting and ending points of the speed measurements should be consistent, and this is the origin why EEDI regulations are worth discussing. When the transverse force is encountered in the speed measurement, the vessel needs energy to control lateral displacement in order to keep the route according to conservation of energy. However, transverse force has not been corrected in EEDI regulation. This is unreasonable and needs to be improved. EEDI regulation suggests that the tests following or against the direction of wind, current and waves, should avoid transverse force. Nevertheless, it¡¯s hard to find such ideal condition in reality. It¡¯s almost inevitable that transverse force may occur during speed measurement. Therefore, the speed measured is lower than the actual value adopting EEDI regulation. This should be improved and there are many methods for the improvement. One is to improve EEDI modification method by correcting transverse force, and the other is to modify the track line of speed measurement. Modification above will make speed measurement more scientific and environmentally friendly.
