“Polar Water Operation Manual” (PWOM) provides operational guidance to the captains and the navigation officers of the polar waters vessels to avoid the ships from over capacity and limits. It is a necessary technical document for the ships operating in the polar waters. This paper studies three key techniques in preparing PWOM based on the analysis of ship operation in polar waters, consisting of the operation evaluation method, determination of the operational capacity and limitation in polar waters, and the operation procedure or operation limitation of the ship and its equipment. The technical solution is put forward and verified by polar shipping practice, which is the technical basis for the implementation of the IMO Polar Code.
