The phenomenon of whipping often occurs in moderate and severe sea state and it often happens to the ships with large bow flare and high service speed especially for container ships. For the cases of ship damage in recent years (MOL Comfort, MSC Napoli), whipping has a significant effect on the ship hull ultimate strength. CCS had paid more attention to the safety of container ships and improved the guidance notes on strength assessment considering whipping effects. This paper introduces the latest progress of CCS¡¯s research on the whipping effects upon ultimate strength assessment of large ships. The nonlinear whipping loads and its influence on the ultimate strength of two types of ULCS are calculated and analyzed, and the assessments of ship hull girder are carried out. Finally, some meaningful conclusions are given.
KEY WORDS: whipping; ultimate strength; ULCS
