Application of spectral analysis for fatigue assessment of ultra large container ships

As container ship has large openings, the hull structure strength especially the fatigue strength of hatch corner caused by torsion and bending stress has been drawing the attention of the designers. The simplified fatigue assessment method may not be applicable to the oversized container ships. When a thorough study of spectral analysis method was carried out with an ultra large container ship as an example, the influence of different environmental conditions, different speeds and different loading conditions for the fatigue strength of ship's hatch corner and other locations is analyzed. The results of the study are helpful to the design optimization of new ship and the safety assessment of the structure.
