Nowadays, researches on the commercial use of autonomous or unmanned ship have been conducted globally. One of the major obstacles for ship autonomous or unmanned operation is how to realize and maintain good situation awareness capacity to ensure ships to obtain or percept sufficient information. The situation awareness is crucial and is the prerequisite for the realization of unmanned/ remote control or autonomous function of ship. Two autonomous ship pilot projects have been carried out in China since 2017, and CCS has deeply participated in the ship design and function verification process. Risk assessment has been conducted to capture objectives and functional requirements for each and every autonomous ship systems especially for situation awareness. In this paper, the main element/key requirements for situation awareness functional design of the autonomous cargo ship will be introduced based on the risk assessment work as well as other experience gained in the pilot projects.
