The 2017 delivered Chinese research vessel JIA GENG is the first time in China to implement the definite requirement (DNV GL SILENT A+S) for underwater noise control, and successfully got the China's first SILENT certificate from DNV GL. This paper discusses the related under water noise criteria, evaluation and prediction method, building inspections and trial verification. Key points in the design process especially low noise considerations of propellers, main diesel generator sets and propulsion motors are summarized, which provides a good reference for similar research vessels.
