In the past, integrating different shipboard systems was constrained by the limited communications between hardware or proprietary technologies and the inadequate performance and high cost of data communication ship/shore via satellite or radio. However, the digital revolution and the Internet of Things, Services and People (IoTSP) have changed what is possible. This paper will describe the elements and system design characteristics of an electric and digital vessel, connected to operations through fleet management and collaborative operation centers. Its authors will argue that, while the road to the fully autonomous fleet may be long, the first steps are being taken today and that a ¡®step-wise¡¯ approach to digitalization can add value at every stage.
