The hydrodynamic performance of a rudder bulb in rudder manoeuvring conditions is examined by CFD. When considering rudder turning angles up to 20กใ to both starboard and port sides, the efficiency gain and the rudder effectiveness of the rudder bulb over the reference without it is shown over 15กใ to starboard and 10กใ to port side. CFD simulations are validated against self-propulsion test results with respect to the efficiency gain of the rudder bulb. An objective function is proposed for estimating the efficiency gain by considering the variations of propeller thrust and rudder resistance in CFD with and without the rudder bulb. A grid verification study is made for the zonal grid size at the clearance between the fairing hubcap and the bulb.
