Mooring lines can be sorted into two kinds: polyester and steel wire. Nowadays, polyester is the main material of the mooring system but it has some technical issues like uncertain material characteristics, while steel wire rope is widely used in various industries for its excellent tensile strength, but the hull must be structurally reinforced and the capacity of the mooring device such as a chain jack must be increased. If these shortcomings are overcome, the steel wire rope would be a very reliable choice from a structural aspect. In this study, structural stability and dynamic behavior of the mooring line (steel wire rope and polyester) of a floating platform (Spar) at deep sea (1200m) were compared and analyzed. Based on the result, the possibility of replacing polyester with steel wire rope is reviewed, and the buoy is applied to a part of the steel wire rope to review the structural stability of the steel wire rope and the dynamic behavior of the floating platform, thus to reduce the load on the floating platform caused by the weight of the steel wire rope.
