Automatic track keeping algorithm using fuzzy inference is proposed to realize a realistic operation in this paper. Cross track error, heading angle and yaw rate were considered for rudder control. An optimum timing or point for manipulating rudder derived from an angle of course change. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed system, numerical simulations with a route plan made by ship operators were carried out using actual external disturbance data of wind and current. The results show that the algorithm has a good performance for ship track keeping.
