The possibility to use Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) for the inspection of ships has been already demonstrated, nonetheless complete solutions ready for a massive adoption of RAS in this field are not yet available and technology, as well as rules and regulations, need to make a step forward and fill some gaps. In this paper, a roadmap is outlined, starting from the current state-of-the-art RAS technology, to an advanced integrated suite of robotics and software tools for inspection of ships, which aims at filling the technological gap that still represents a barrier to the adoption of innovative technology in this field. The technological gap is identified by means of an analysis of the needs and expectations of potential end users, including classification societies, ship owners, shipyards and service suppliers, compared to what RAS platforms can actually do.
