Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are used today in many industries and applications and there is wide agreement that the number of applications will increase at a very fast speed. But in which cases will AI offer the largest benefits and which cases are today considered in the maritime industry? This paper reports several R&D studies on AI in DNV GL and discusses the benefits and challenges of AI capabilities such as speech recognition, autonomous navigation, and interpretation of text, images and videos when applied to problems in the maritime industry across the phases of the ship life cycle. DNV GL as a Classification Society is adapting and developing AI capabilities to improve production and delivery of core services such as approval and survey but also to create entirely new services. The paper concludes with an outlook on assurance of current AI-based systems.
