Over the last three decades, Dutch fisheries have been familiar with sustainability in fishing vessel (re)design processes, where the triple-P philosophies have increasingly been incorporated. In the 80s the sector had to adapt to a sound Safety & Health Environment, since 2000 the Small and Medium sized Enterprises have been working to address their Corporate Social Responsibilities and today the fishery sector should also anticipate the Circular Economy principles. The Paris Climate Agreement (2016) is the societal-political trigger with Horizon 2050 targets (triple-Z). These goals are appealing starting points for a new pre-design tool, holistically ranking sustainability in the fishing vessel design process, the here-called Circular Economy Design Index.

KEY WORDS: sustainability; fishing vessel; holistic ship design concept; green technologies; emission and fuels; recycling; human factors; circular economy; autonomous shipping
