Safety of containerships might cover a very wide range of topics, from recent updates in fire-fighting regulations to carriage of dangerous cargo or risks to be carefully assessed when using LNG as fuel. Focus will be given here to two key aspects: hydro-elasticity of large container ships, and issues related to lashing of containers. High speed and large flexibility of the largest container ships result in high sensitivity of these ships to hydro-elastic effects, namely whipping and springing. Bureau Veritas has been working on direct assessment of these effects for many years and has built relevant tools and strong experience on these matters. Effect of whipping is mainly a concern for ultimate strength of the hull girder, while springing strongly affects the fatigue life of the vessel. There has been recently quite a number of containers lost at sea, for various reasons. Investigation results will be shared and the recent updates of Bureau Veritas Rules for lashing will be presented. The updates reflect the latest conclusions following investigations, include new calculations methods in order to improve the accuracy, and therefore increase flexibility in cargo loading.
